This is an open access journal which means that all content is freely available without charge to users or their institution. Published since 1965 by the Institute of Oriental Studies at the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava, Asian and African Studies is a double-blind peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the study of languages, literatures, cultures, and histories of the regions of Asia, Africa, and the Pacific. Its scope encompasses the geo-cultural areas of the Middle East, the Arab World, the Persianate World, North and Sub-Saharan Africa, Ancient Egypt, East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania. Works focusing on communities with strong historical, cultural, or religious ties to these regions are also encouraged.

The journal publishes original, previously unpublished articles across a wide array of disciplines, primarily focused on history, linguistics, literature and cultural studies, however, outstanding contributions from social and political sciences, religious studies, art and philosophy, as well as interdisciplinary and comparative works are also welcome. Please note that the journal does not publish technical or educational materials, nor does it accept contributions in the fields of economics and medicine.

Special issues of the journal can explore particular themes or share conference proceedings, enhancing the breadth and depth of our scholarly discussions while staying within the scope defined by the journal. In addition to scholarly papers, the journal publishes review articles and critical assessments of publications related to Asia, Africa, and the Pacific.

AAS mostly publishes papers in English, but sometimes includes articles in French and German (accompanied by English abstracts). Each academic paper in this journal undergoes a rigorous peer-review process, involving initial editor screening and subsequent blind reviews conducted by independent experts in the field.

The journal is published biannually, with releases in May and November. The decision to publish articles is made by the editorial board based on the results of the peer-review process. Two external reviewers are added to the review conducted by the editorial board member for each submission. Articles should not exceed a length of 6 000 – 7 500 words (36 000 – 45 000 characters, including spaces). Manuscripts submitted for publication must adhere to the internationally recognized academic standards for presentation and formatting. Bibliographies and citations should respect the journal’s Style Sheet, with the citation norm required for articles being ISO 690-2.

Submissions to AAS must be based on original research. By submitting their paper to AAS, the authors affirm that it has not been previously published (including online or in a different form or different language) and that it is not concurrently under review by another journal. At the time of their submission, the articles shall be complete, including thorough bibliographical references. All parties engaged in the publication process, including authors, editors, and reviewers, are expected to adhere to the standards of the journal’s publication ethics.

If a manuscript fails to adhere to the formal requirements or ethical standards of AAS, or it does not align thematically with the focus or the journal, the editors and editorial board reserve the right to return or reject the paper. The articles must be written in clear, academic language without grammatical mistakes and spelling errors. Please be aware that submitting a paper with low language quality may lead to its rejection. When authors submit their manuscript to AAS, they declare their agreement with the journal’s open access publication policy, while still retaining their authorial rights.

Please note that under exceptional circumstances, such as a high volume of contributions or a delayed review process, submissions may be published in a volume other than the one currently open for input.

There are no fees for processing articles.

Please send manuscripts (accompanied by an English abstract of approximately 150 words and 4-6 key words) to aassom@savba.sk.
