The study aims at providing a short summary of issues associated with verb sequencing and, more specifically, verb serializing in some of the world´s languages, and to confront them with the linguistic situation of Arabic. Since the analytic structures stand relatively closer to the process of sequencing than fully inflected synthetic ones, the evidence gathered from the colloquial varieties of Arabic will constitute the chief material basis for the present inquiry.

Key words: argument sharing, compound verb, coordination, coordinated verb pairs, modal verb (Vm), as opposed to full or main verb (V), serial verb (SV), serial verb construction (SVC) subordination, verb pairs, verb phrase (VP), verb sequence.

IRAQ – THE LAST PHASE OF ABDALKARIM QASIM’S REGIME

The foreign policy of Iraq during the regime of cAbdalkarim Qasim was basically governed by the same forces that shaped the policy of the ancien regime and that consisted in the main in asserting Iraq’s independence. The leading forces of the Iraqi monarchy could naturally see the value of Arab solidarity but they also appreciated the common interests with Iraq’s non-Arab neighbours, Turkey and Iran. Obviously, the principal error was in over-stressing those interests at the expense of Arab solidarity at a time when pan-Arab excitement had reached a high pitch, and in ignoring the drive towards neutralism which had dominated the Arab world, in which “Iraq remained the committed oasis in a vast neutralist desert.” The critics of such a policy stated that Iraq’s need for weapons and technical know-how could be obtained from other powers and not only from the West, and adherence to Arab solidarity would provide the necessary strength. It is clear that the opposition to the ancien regime originated mainly from domestic issues, but it concentrated on foreign policy because it conflicted with an ideology that had become predominant in Arab politics.

Key words: Iraq 1961-1962, cAbdalkarim Qasim the lonely “Sole Leader”, deterioration of the political situation, descent to a violent change of regime.

THE PHONO-TYPOLOGICAL DISTANCES BETWEEN AINU AND THE OTHER WORLD LANGUAGES AS A CLUE FOR CLOSENESS OF LANGUAGES

The article deals with one of the genetically isolated languages – Ainu. It is usually a common practice in linguistics to provide a genetic identification of a language. The generic identity of a language is the language family to which it belongs. Therefore, is advisable to find a family for every isolated language.
The new method of phonostatistics proposed here allows a linguist to find the typological distances between Ainu and the other languages of different genetic language families. The minimum distances may be a good clue for placing Ainu in this or that language family. The result of the investigation shows the minimum typological distance between Ainu and the Quechuan family (American Indian languages).

Key words: consonants, phonological, distance, typology, frequency of occurrence, speech sound chain, statistics, closeness.

COMPLEX SENTENCE INCLUDING A TEMPORAL CLAUSE
Problems of Marquesan syntax

Viktor KRUPA

Complex sentence types including deverbative in the predicative function of dependent clause in the Marquesan language are described here. Texts collected and published by E. S. Craighil Handy in 1930 as well as the important collection of Marquesan legends prepared by Henri Lavondès are employed for the description and analysis of complex sentences containing dependent clauses of temporal meaning. All documents used illustrate the linguistic situation on the islands and demonstrate the existing differences concerning phonology (especially the consonantal system), just as the functioning of the grammatical category of deverbalization in syntax.

Key words: Marquesan syntax, complex sentence, territorial clause, nominal particles, deverbalization, southeastern and northwestern dialects of Marquesan.

IO – THE SUPREME GOD OF POLYNESIANS?

This contribution is dealing with the question of faith in a supreme being of Polynesia. Believes in this God, called Io, Ihoiho or Kiho, appear in the written records from the end of the 19th century. The problem consists of the fact they appeared after the first contacts with Christianity and no doubt the informants were already influenced by the new faith. Nowadays the specialists incline more to the concept that the existence of a supreme deity cult is the result of the impact of Christian teaching.

Key words: monotheism, Io, supreme being, Polynesian religion.

ETHIOPIA AS AN IMAGE: THE CZECHOSLOVAK AND EUROPEAN PRESS OF THE 1920s AND EARLY 1930s

This paper, based on my research in the National Archive of the Czech Republic, analyses the European (and mainly Czechoslovak) way of imagining Ethiopia during the period of the Italian-Ethiopian tensions. It thus characterizes the period of the 1920s and early 1930s. For a detailed insight into the world of the media with regard to Ethiopia, a large number of newspapers is discussed. Though Ethiopia was a member of the League of Nations, her position within the then world was far from being equal. The way Ethiopia was imagined by Europe corresponds to the way Ethiopia was treated. This means that imagining distant places and distant people is always accompanied by stereotypes which in times of war may legitimize an action as was the case with Fascist Italy. As the war was nearing, Ethiopia gained more and more sympathies around the world which complicates some further generalization. The multi-dimensionality of images is thus the main aim of this work.
